Someone asked me recently what exactly I’m doing with Held, Not Measured.
And honestly, I wasn’t quite sure how to answer.
Is it about body image? Faith? Our little old house? Family stories?
Apparently, I’ve decided to talk about all of it. 😂
But the more I thought about it, the more I realized maybe those things aren’t as disconnected as they seem.
Held, Not Measured started with a scale.
On January 1st, I stepped on mine one last time. I looked at the number, stepped off, and took the scale to the trash.
For years, that number had way too much power over how I felt about myself. Was I doing good? Was I doing bad? Was what I was doing “working”?
I didn’t want to do that anymore.
At the time, I thought throwing away the scale was the story.
I’m beginning to think it was just where the story started.
Because we measure a lot more than our bodies.
We compare our homes to other people’s homes. We measure how much we get done, how successful we are and whether we’re doing a good enough job at all the different roles we have.
And then there’s social media. 😂 Views. Likes. Followers.
It seems like we can find a number for just about everything.
Maybe that’s why Held, Not Measured has become a little bit of everything too.
I talk about taking care of my body without trying to punish it into becoming smaller. I talk about faith and what God is teaching me. I tell stories about people I love, share our little 1942 house and sometimes just share something that made me smile.
Maybe none of those things are really the point.
Maybe I’m just learning to appreciate the life I already have without constantly trying to measure whether it’s good enough.
My body doesn’t have to be a certain size to deserve care.
My house doesn’t have to be big or new to be home.
And I don’t have to get everything right to be loved by God.
So what exactly am I doing with Held, Not Measured?
I’m still figuring that out. 😂
But I think I’m learning to take care of myself without constantly measuring myself. To appreciate ordinary things. To stop always reaching for some better version of myself or my life.
And maybe to remember that being held was always more important than being measured.
I thought throwing away the scale was the story.
Turns out, it may have just been the beginning.
What are you ready to stop measuring?
