A few years ago, I walked away from social media.
Not because I thought it was evil. It just wasn’t adding much to my life, and I found that I didn’t miss it.
Then I started Held, Not Measured.
I knew that if I wanted to share what I was writing, I would have to step back into social media. So I did. Facebook. Pinterest. More recently, TikTok.
At first, I told myself I would only use it to encourage others.
But before long, I found myself doing something else.
Checking.
How many views? How many likes? How many followers?
It wasn’t taking over my life, but I could feel it trying to pull my attention away from the life right in front of me.
That’s when I realized something.
Social media isn’t the problem.
Just like food isn’t the problem. Just like the scale wasn’t the problem.
It’s what happens when something gets out of balance.
I’ve learned that I don’t do well with extremes. I don’t want to swear off everything forever, but I also don’t want to spend my days staring at a screen while life passes by.
So I’ve decided to try something simple.
No Social Media on S Days.
That means no Facebook, TikTok, Pinterest, or scrolling on Saturdays and Sundays.
Instead, I want to spend those days with real people.
I want to enjoy church without wondering how my latest post is doing.
I want to laugh with my family, read a good library book, work in my garden, take a walk with my husband, or simply sit on the porch with a cup of coffee.
I want to live the life I’m writing about instead of constantly posting about it.
Will I do this perfectly?
Probably not.
But I think healthy boundaries lead to a healthier heart.
If you’re feeling tired from constantly checking your phone, maybe you’d like to try it too.
Not because you have to.
Not because social media is bad.
But because sometimes the best way to reconnect with others is to disconnect for a little while.
I’d love to know what you think.
Would you join me for No Social Media on S Days?
